Melon sea urchin

Facile à repérer en plongée grâce à sa forme de boule et à ses piquants courts, l’oursin melon repose souvent seul sur le sable ou les fonds coralligènes. Ce paisible brouteur nettoie le substrat en consommant algues, débris et petites proies fixées.

COMMENT EST-IL ?

L’oursin melon est reconnaissable à sa forme presque sphérique et à son aspect peu épineux. Son test, de grande taille, peut atteindre une quinzaine de centimètres de diamètre. Ses piquants sont présents mais relativement courts et peu visibles, ce qui donne l’impression d’un oursin presque lisse. Ils sont de teinte verdâtre à jaunâtre, parfois avec une pointe plus claire.

OÙ VIT-IL ?

Il vit sur des fonds variés, souvent sableux, détritiques ou coralligènes, généralement à des profondeurs importantes. On le rencontre aussi à proximité de zones rocheuses.

QUE MANGE-T-IL ?

Son alimentation est diversifiée : il consomme des algues, des débris organiques et de petits organismes présents sur le fond. Il se nourrit en raclant le substrat.
