Burrowing Anemone

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean

The Burrowing Anemone is an inconspicuous encounter on sandy seabeds. Its wide ring of tentacles emerges from the sediment like a flower resting on the bottom. At the slightest suspicious movement, it instantly retracts into its refuge, leaving no visible trace.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The Burrowing Anemone is a large sea anemone whose upper part alone is visible at the sediment surface. Its oral disc can reach a considerable size, making it striking on soft seabeds. Its tentacles are arranged in several rings around the mouth. Those at the edge often spread over the substrate, while the innermost ones stand more upright. Colour ranges from beige to brown, sometimes with lighter shades.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It lives buried in soft sediments, mainly sand or sandy mud, where it digs a tube in which it anchors itself firmly. It occurs in the Mediterranean and the north-east Atlantic at varying depths, from shallow areas down to several tens of metres.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

It captures small prey using tentacles equipped with stinging cells. These cells immobilise organisms on contact.Prey are then carried towards the mouth in the centre of the oral disc.
