Edwards' Sea Squirt

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean

Underwater, Edwards' Sea Squirt stands out through its slender outline and translucent colour. Attached to rocks in calm areas, it continually filters seawater, contributing to the natural recycling of organic matter in its environment.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

This solitary ascidian has an elongated, flexible, translucent body, often tinged with yellow. Its surface is smooth and slightly gelatinous. It has two clearly visible openings: an upper siphon through which water enters and another at the side through which it leaves. The edges of these siphons have regular lobes characteristic of the species.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It lives attached to hard surfaces such as rocks, walls or underwater structures. It is often found in sheltered or slightly shaded areas, but always where currents bring the suspended particles it needs for food.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

Like all ascidians, it feeds by filtering water. It draws water in through its inhalant siphon and retains very fine particles such as phytoplankton and organic matter.Filtered water is then released through the other siphon, maintaining a continuous flow through its body.
