Grey triggerfish

Distribution : Mediterranean and warm-temperate Atlantic. Long-established on French coasts, with Mediterranean and Bay of Biscay records and more occasional observations in the Channel and Brittany.

Meeting a grey triggerfish can be surprising on a French coast, yet this species has long belonged to Atlantic and Mediterranean fauna. Depending on season and location, its attention may focus on exploring a surface, breaking resistant food or defending a clutch of eggs.

Commonly 30–45 cm; up to 60 cm in DORIS

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The grey triggerfish has an oval, deep and strongly compressed body. Thick skin carries small plates that give a rough appearance. The head forms a substantial part of the outline, with small eyes and a short terminal mouth bordered by thick lips. Two separate dorsal fins and a crescent tail complete the main features. Adults commonly measure 30–45 centimetres and can reach 60 centimetres.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

The species uses rocky coastal areas, algal growth, some offshore reefs and wrecks. During warm periods, encounters may occur within the first few tens of metres. Movement into deeper water in winter changes its accessibility. Its natural distribution includes the Mediterranean and both Atlantic coasts.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

Its small mouth holds powerful teeth that can break shells and carapaces. It eats bivalves, molluscs with two-part shells, as well as barnacles and crabs. These prey live both on surfaces covered in attached animals and on soft seabeds.
