Long-striped blenny

Distribution : Mediterranean

On rocky surfaces, the striped blenny forms a tiny pale outline crossed by a dark band. Up close, fine blue lines mark its snout and branching filaments rise above the eyes. Males settle in narrow holes where they receive and guard eggs.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Striped blennies are slender and elongated, reaching about 8 centimetres. Their pale beige bodies usually carry a dark band from head to tail on each side.

One long fin follows the back. Above the eyes, ocular tentacles, small skin filaments, divide into several branches. Blue lines mark the snout.

Males have longer filaments and may show a green to dark blue patch at the front of the dorsal fin.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

They frequent hard surfaces, rocks and rubble between about 3 and 40 metres. They also occur in coralligenous formations, structures supporting lime-forming algae among other life.

Small rock holes provide shelters and breeding sites.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

They eat algae, small crustaceans such as copepods, and marine worms. The diet therefore combines plant and animal resources.

Food is sought close to bottom surfaces, in the same surroundings as their shelters.
