Little Neptune Grass

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean

On shallow sandy seabeds, little Neptune grass forms flexible meadows of fine, swaying leaves. Less spectacular than Posidonia but just as useful, this marine plant protects sediments, oxygenates the water and shelters a multitude of small coastal organisms.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Little Neptune grass is a marine plant that forms low, flexible meadows on shallow sandy seabeds. It looks like fine grass, with long, narrow leaves that are often soft green.Smaller and less conspicuous than Posidonia, it is distinguished by its finer, more flexible leaves, which sway easily with the movement of the water. It grows in colonies that gradually spread through creeping stems.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It is mainly found in shallow coastal areas on well-lit sandy or sandy-muddy seabeds. It forms meadows from the surface to a few tens of metres deep, depending on water clarity. It tolerates sometimes rough environments and readily colonises areas where the sand shifts.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

Like all marine plants, it makes its own material using sunlight. This process is called photosynthesis. It uses carbon dioxide and mineral nutrients to produce energy and releases oxygen into the water.
