Black Seabream

Often seen in small groups above seagrass beds or near rocks, the black seabream has a subtle silvery colour. In spring, males become territorial and watch over their nests, a remarkable behaviour in this coastal fish.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The black seabream has an oval body compressed at the sides, with a powerful tail that allows it to swim quickly. Its colour is usually silvery grey, paler on the belly, sometimes with faint, fine lines. Its dark eye has a slight golden glint.Its dorsal fin is long and continuous. Young fish have a more pointed snout. At night or during breeding, its colour can become darker and vertical bands may appear.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

The black seabream mainly lives near the coast. It is found between the surface and around thirty metres deep, near rocks, Posidonia seagrass beds or on varied seabeds.Adults can also live deeper, sometimes down to around 200 metres, on sandy or debris-covered seabeds.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

The black seabream has a varied diet. It mainly eats small bottom-dwelling animals such as crustaceans, molluscs and worms.It can also eat algae. This varied diet allows it to adapt easily to its environment.
