📏 Size

Males: up to 18–20 cm

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

This is a fairly large goby: large males may reach about 18 to 20 centimetres. Prominent eyes sit close together above a broad head.

Two dorsal fins follow one another. The first has a black patch; in large males it becomes tall and pointed, with one ray extending beyond the fin.

Colours range from mottled to deep black. Young fish and females need not have the dark appearance behind the common name.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

The species frequents sand or mud, seagrass and algae. Brackish lagoons and estuaries, mixed with fresh water, suit it.

It often lives in the upper ten to fifteen metres without being restricted to those depths.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

It eats small crustaceans, molluscs and worms. Insect larvae may be taken in brackish habitats, along with small fish.

Meals mainly come from near the bottom. Available prey differs between lagoons and open marine habitats.
