Quagga Goby

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean

On a sandy seabed, the Quagga Goby often appears only at the last moment. Its greyish mottling blends perfectly into its surroundings. Motionless and then suddenly very lively, this small fish explores the sediment in search of tiny prey.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Very fast and capable of sudden bursts of acceleration, the Quagga Goby is a small fish with an elongated body, generally reaching a few centimetres. Its outline is slender and almost cylindrical, with a narrow tail and closely spaced eyes high on its head. Its head is pointed, with a slightly projecting lower jaw. Small scales cover the body, while the head area may appear smoother depending on the light. Its colour varies from grey to yellowish, with dark bands and mottled markings along the body. Diffuse spots can be seen on the flanks, sometimes with markings along the back. These patterns may vary slightly between individuals and environmental conditions, but do not change with mood.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It frequents shallow coastal areas, mainly on sandy or muddy-sand seabeds, sometimes alongside seagrass meadows. It can be observed from a few metres to several tens of metres deep, depending on local conditions. It can sometimes be encountered in small groups above the seabed. In danger, it quickly presses itself against the substrate or takes refuge in the sand, where it becomes difficult to spot.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

The Quagga Goby mainly feeds on small benthic invertebrates, particularly microcrustaceans living in the sand or on the seabed.
