Green algae (Caulerpa cylindracea)

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean · Indian Ocean · Pacific Ocean

With its small green beads grouped in clusters, this green alga quickly catches a diver’s attention. It sometimes forms extensive sheets over rocky or sandy seabeds. Its rapid growth and dispersal through fragments favour establishment in many coastal habitats.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

This invasive green alga, often called grape caulerpa, forms dense carpets on the seabed. It is recognised by small upright branchlets arranged along an axis, resembling elongated grapes or small clubs. Its colour is generally bright green. Originally from tropical regions, it has spread widely through the Mediterranean, where it advances quickly.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It colonises a wide variety of environments: rocks, seagrass beds and sandy or muddy seabeds, from shallow water down to several dozen metres. It tolerates varied conditions, including disturbed areas.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

Like all algae, it makes its own material through photosynthesis, using light, carbon dioxide and nutrients dissolved in the water.
