Easy to recognise by reddish lines on its head, the Comber is a familiar inhabitant of walls and rocky rubble. Often motionless in front of a crevice, it carefully watches its surroundings before swooping on passing prey.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The Comber is a small fish with an elongated body slightly compressed at the sides. It has brownish colouring marked with darker vertical bands. Coloured diagonal lines, often orange or reddish, can be seen on the head. A paler line may run along the flanks. Its mouth is relatively broad, with thick lips typical of combers.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It lives on rocky seabeds, in coralligenous areas and sometimes on mixed substrates. It occurs from shallow water down to several tens of metres. It often stays near shelter such as a crack or cavity.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

It is a predator feeding on small fish, crustaceans, worms and other small marine animals. It generally hunts by ambush, staying close to its shelter.
