Brown comber

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean

Little known to divers, the Brown comber is nevertheless common on slightly deeper seabeds. Its stocky outline, dark bands and inconspicuousness allow it to blend into its surroundings, from where it patiently watches prey.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The Brown comber is a small, stocky fish in the comber family. Its outline resembles that of its close relatives, but in a more compact form. It has several dark vertical bands against a brown to beige background, along with a clearly visible black spot on the dorsal fin. Its wide-opening mouth allows it to suck in prey rapidly.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

This species lives near the bottom in varied areas: rocky seabeds, sandy substrates or areas mixing sand and debris. It is mainly found from about twenty metres deep, often inconspicuous and resting near the substrate.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

The Brown comber is a predator consuming small seabed animals: crustaceans, worms and small fish. It generally hunts at close range, staying near its shelter.
