ABOUT THIS LEARNING PATH

Journey into the heart of wrecks

PrerequisitesNo prior knowledge required
Duration40–45 minutes
PublicAdults

Learning objectives

  • Discover the biodiversity that colonises wrecks
  • Understand the role of wrecks as artificial habitats
  • Observe interactions between submerged structures and marine species

This learning path introduces you to wrecks: artificial reefs where marine life takes over. Explore how submerged structures become a refuge for a wide range of marine species, from algae and corals to fish and invertebrates. Discover the ecological role of these unusual habitats, where human history meets the natural dynamics of the seabed.

The real life of wrecks

Unlike the images found in films, comics and video games, real wrecks are not treasure chests filled with skeletons. Underwater, they primarily become habitats for marine life: fish, crustaceans and attached organisms colonise their surfaces and cavities, turning human remains into unique ecosystems.

INTRODUCTION

When a structure comes to life

Little by little, life settled on the submerged structure. Algae, fish and crustaceans turned the hull into an unexpected reef. What was once a human creation became a marine realm. Wrecks, remnants of our histories, now offer shelter, food and refuge to abundant biodiversity, between memory and renewal.

More than just ships

Many wrecks are boats, but the sea also conceals other sunken relics: aircraft, tanks, vehicles and even industrial structures. Over time, all become surfaces on which life can settle. Aircraft wings draped in algae, engines covered in sponges, cabins turned into fish shelters: this variety of shapes offers countless ecological niches. Whether they came from the sky, land or sea, these remains eventually disappear beneath the same living covering.
