WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Leucothea multicornis is a ctenophore with a gelatinous, transparent, elongated body. Its body is extremely fragile and almost entirely water, giving it a floating, luminous appearance in the water column. It has long, thin, branched tentacles that it can extend or retract. Movement is provided by rows of beating cilia that create iridescent effects when catching the light.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It lives in open water among the plankton, never attaching to anything. It is passively carried by marine currents. It occurs in the Mediterranean and some Atlantic areas, with presence varying according to seasons and environmental conditions.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

It feeds on small planktonic organisms, such as larvae and microcrustaceans in the water. Its tentacles capture prey using adhesive cells, then convey them to the central mouth.
