Distribution : A group found in several seas, including Red Sea and Raja Ampat reefs. Exact distribution depends on species.
A silver fish stands out against the blue: a barracuda passes beside the reef. Alone or in groups depending on species and circumstances, these hunters are part of life in open water. Encountering them invites us to look beyond the corals, where other fish move through the water. Depths vary between species in this group and with their habitat.

WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?
Barracudas have a long body, a pointed head and a large mouth. Their sides are often silver, with markings that vary between species. The jaws have well-developed teeth; body patterns and fins need to be examined together to establish the species.
WHERE DO THEY LIVE?
Habitats include reefs and coastal waters. Juvenile nursery areas differ between species; information about Sphyraena barracuda does not represent the whole genus.
WHAT DO THEY EAT?
Their diet is dominated by fish. Visual detection and brief acceleration contribute to capture, while diet details and behaviour vary by species.
