Yellowfin goatfish

Distribution : Red Sea, Indian Ocean and tropical Pacific.

The yellowfin goatfish explores the bottom in search of small animals. Night-time offers another opportunity to discover this fish and how it finds food. Its movements connect sandy areas with inhabitants often concealed within the bottom material. Its documented depth range is 1–113 metres.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The yellowfin goatfish has a pale body with a yellow stripe along the sides. Two barbels lie beneath its chin and can be directed towards the bottom to explore it. These sensitive filaments distinguish it from fishes with a similar stripe but no barbels.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

Sandy bottoms near reefs offer buried animals and nearby shelter. This fish uses different reef sectors; age, resting and feeding can affect its location. One night observation cannot describe every habitat it uses.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

It searches for bottom-dwelling invertebrates, including crustaceans, worms and small molluscs. Barbels contacting the sediment complement visual prey detection. Disturbing sand while feeding can also make food accessible to other fish.
