WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
Juveniles have dark bars on yellow, while adults are more silvery with variable markings. The protrusible mouth can extend to take food. Published maximum total length reaches 1.20 metres, which is not an average size.
WHERE DOES IT LIVE?
Documented from the surface to 78 metres, it inhabits reefs and soft seabeds across several tropical seas. Demersal here describes use of water near the bottom; it means neither immobility nor permanent contact with the substrate.
WHAT DOES IT EAT?
Its diet includes small fish and benthic invertebrates. A protrusible mouth helps suck in food. Juveniles accompanying a large animal are not, merely because of that association, eating it.
