On a sandy seabed, only a fragment of shell may reveal the Mediterranean helmet shell’s presence. Mainly active at nightfall, this large sea snail attacks sea urchins and sometimes leaves behind a faint groove marking its passage.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The Mediterranean helmet shell is a mollusc with a thick, rounded shell reminiscent of a helmet. Its surface is decorated with wavy ridges and pale shades marbled with brown.Its soft body can be partly covered by a mantle that sometimes extends over the shell. It moves slowly using a broad, muscular foot.Its strong shell provides its main protection against predators.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

This species mainly lives on sandy or detrital seabeds, where it can partly bury itself.It occurs in the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic, generally between a few metres and several tens of metres deep.It often remains hidden in the substrate during the day and becomes more active at nightfall.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

The Mediterranean helmet shell is a specialised predator that feeds mainly on echinoderms, particularly sea urchins.It uses a rasping tongue called a radula, together with digestive secretions, to attack and consume its prey.
