Distribution : A group found in several seas, including Red Sea and Raja Ampat reefs. Exact distribution depends on species.
Damselfishes are among the small fishes found around corals. This shared name covers species with varied habits and colours. Watching them reveals reef diversity, even when an image is insufficient to establish the species. Depths vary between species in this group and with their habitat.

WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?
Damselfishes generally have a short body flattened from side to side. Their colours and spots vary between species and may change with age. Fin shape and the arrangement of markings help identification; the filmed animal’s dark colour does not establish its species.
WHERE DO THEY LIVE?
Reefs provide refuges; some species live beside anemones or branching corals. Shelter choice depends on species and life stage and cannot be generalised across the family. This group guide interprets the scene without assigning the ecology of an unidentified species to the fish filmed.
WHAT DO THEY EAT?
The group includes plankton feeders, algal grazers and species with mixed diets. Their food-web roles therefore differ; one universal diet would be misleading. Food resources are presented for the group and do not demonstrate the meal of the fish filmed.
