Red Sea porcupinefishes

Distribution : This group also occurs outside the Red Sea. Distribution depends on the species; this guide presents the representatives filmed here.

A porcupinefish moves beside the reef, its body covered in spines. It can inflate in defence, but this reaction should never be provoked. Quiet observation allows us to discover its ordinary behaviour. Depths vary between species in this group and with their habitat.

WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?

Porcupinefishes have a rounded body, large eyes and spines on the skin. Their fused teeth form a robust mouth; the spines stand up when the body inflates. Large patches, small spots and fin patterns differ between species; they are not clear enough here to establish the filmed species.

WHERE DO THEY LIVE?

Reefs and cavities provide shelter; habitats vary with species and age. A free-swimming juvenile phase may place young fish away from adult habitat. The group must therefore not receive a depth range copied from just one species.

WHAT DO THEY EAT?

Fused teeth form a mouth capable of crushing hard defences. Molluscs and crustaceans are food resources, linking porcupinefishes to seabed animals. Without evidence for a particular pair, the guide links food groups rather than an arbitrarily chosen species.
