Tropical sea stars

Distribution : Tropical seas; each species has its own range.

A sea star turns the reef into a slowly travelled path. It reminds us that not every animal has a clearly visible head. On coastal reefs, occupied depth varies between species.

WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?

Arms radiate around a central disc. Small feet beneath the arms enable movement. Colour, arm count and dimensions vary; silhouette alone cannot identify a species.

WHERE DO THEY LIVE?

Some move over rock and coral; others use sediment. The film shows sea stars on the reef but does not measure their depth.

WHAT DO THEY EAT?

Diets differ greatly. Some consume biofilms and organic debris; others capture animals. A single diet cannot be assigned to the entire group.
