Brown wrasse

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean

In a rocky crevice or at the edge of a seagrass meadow, the Brown wrasse often reveals itself at the last moment. Its dark outline and thick lips make it easy to recognise. Territorial and wary, it patrols near the seabed looking for small invertebrates.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

This robust-bodied fish has dark colouring, generally greenish brown to blackish. Its body is fairly bulky, with a broad head and distinctive thick lips. Its fins may show faint bluish reflections, but it remains rather inconspicuous overall, allowing it to blend well into its surroundings.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It is mainly encountered in rocky areas rich in hiding places, but also in Posidonia seagrass meadows. It generally lives in shallow water, where it can easily hide in hollows and crevices.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

It feeds on small seabed animals, such as crustaceans, molluscs, worms and sometimes sea urchins, caught by searching the substrate.
