Bluespotted cornetfish

Distribution : Red Sea, Indian Ocean and tropical Pacific; also established in the Mediterranean after passage through the Suez Canal.

A slender silhouette moves beside the reef: a bluespotted cornetfish. This discreet hunter reminds us that predators do not all have a bulky body. Watching it reveals another way of moving and finding food among the reef contours. Its documented depth range is 0–100 metres.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The bluespotted cornetfish has a very long, thin body, with a mouth at the end of an elongated snout. A long filament extends from its tail, and its fins are small in proportion to its body. Its snout forms a tube; the tail filament helps distinguish it from trumpetfishes, which lack this feature.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

Native to the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, it inhabits reefs and various coastal bottoms. Its arrival in the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal is distinct from its status within its native range.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

Its diet mainly consists of fish, alongside crustaceans and cephalopods. Suction feeding combines a discreet approach with rapid mouth movement.
