Red fanworm

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean

The bright red fans of the Red fanworm emerging from shaded walls often catch the eye. Motionless inside its tube, it uses currents to capture fine food particles. Patience and a quiet approach allow its crown to be seen opening slowly.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

This marine worm lives in a calcareous tube that it makes itself. At its end, it opens a red to orange crown arranged in two fans forming a U-like shape. This crown consists of many thin filaments used for breathing and catching food. In danger, the animal retreats very quickly into its tube.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It is attached to solid supports such as rocks, coralligenous structures or boulders. It occurs from shallow areas to greater depths.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

It feeds by filtering water: its tentacles capture tiny suspended particles and organisms, then direct them towards its mouth.
