Lors d'une plongée de nuit, le poulpe rouge attire souvent le regard par sa teinte rouge brun et ses petites taches blanches. Ses bras exceptionnellement longs lui permettent d'inspecter le fond avec précision. Discret le jour, ce chasseur devient très actif dès la tombée de la nuit.

COMMENT EST-IL ?

Ce poulpe présente une coloration rouge à brun rouge, parsemée de nombreuses petites taches claires bien visibles. Ses bras sont très longs et fins par rapport à son corps, ce qui lui donne une silhouette élancée. Comme les autres poulpes, il peut changer rapidement d’aspect pour se camoufler. Lorsqu’il se sent menacé, il peut adopter des postures d’intimidation ou s’éloigner brusquement en expulsant de l’eau.

OÙ VIT-IL ?

Il fréquente différents types de fonds, notamment sableux, rocheux ou couverts d’herbiers. Discret le jour, il reste caché dans un abri, sous une pierre ou dans une cavité, et devient actif à la tombée de la nuit.

QUE MANGE-T-IL ?

C’est un prédateur qui se nourrit surtout de crustacés et d’autres petits animaux benthiques. Il capture ses proies avec ses bras puis les consomme à l’aide de son bec.
