Greater weever

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean · Black Sea

Difficult to spot before it moves, the Greater weever spends its days buried in sand with eyes directed towards the surface. This ambush hunter catches prey in a fraction of a second. When diving, it is better to inspect the seabed before leaning on it.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The Greater weever is an elongated fish with a thin body perfectly adapted to life buried in sediment. Its head is flattened, with eyes on top allowing it to watch its surroundings while remaining hidden. Its mouth faces upwards. Its beige to light brown, sometimes marbled colouring provides effective camouflage in sand. Its first dorsal fin bears venomous spines capable of being raised when threatened.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It lives on sandy or muddy seabeds, where it spends much of its time buried, leaving only its eyes and mouth showing.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

The Greater weever is an ambush predator. It catches small fish and crustaceans by darting rapidly out of sand. After attacking, it buries itself again almost immediately.
