Red-mouthed Goby

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean · Black Sea

Resting at the entrance to a cavity, the Red-mouthed Goby calmly observes its surroundings. Its reddish-brown colouring lets it blend among the rocks. Territorial and inconspicuous, it makes short trips to catch small prey before returning to shelter.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

This goby has an elongated, robust body typical of fish living near the seabed. Its colouring varies from brown to reddish, often mottled, with a paler area on the belly. The species’ name comes from the reddish tinge seen around the mouth in some individuals. A single long dorsal fin extends along the back and may bear dark markings. Its well-developed pectoral fins allow it to stabilise itself on the substrate.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It frequents rocky seabeds, detrital areas and sometimes sandy sectors, often near shelters such as cracks or boulders. It is generally encountered in the Mediterranean and the Northeast Atlantic at shallow or moderate depths.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

Its diet is mainly carnivorous and opportunistic. It catches small invertebrates living on the seabed, such as crustaceans, worms and various benthic organisms. It may also ingest organic particles depending on availability.
