Acropora corals

Distribution : This group also occurs outside the Red Sea. Distribution depends on the species; this guide presents the representatives filmed here.

On the reef, acropora corals form branches and sometimes broad tables. These structures are produced by small animals living in colonies. They give the landscape varied shapes and provide spaces that other reef inhabitants can use. Depths vary between species in this group and with their habitat.

WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE?

Acropora corals are hard corals, many of which form branches. Their skeleton bears small cups housing the polyps; some colonies spread into table-like shapes. The arrangement of these cups and skeletal details help distinguish species, because similarly shaped colonies can belong to different species.

WHERE DO THEY LIVE?

These corals structure reef habitats, although requirements and sensitivity vary. Light, water movement and temperature help shape development.

WHAT DO THEY EAT?

Nutrition combines products from symbiotic algal photosynthesis with food captured from the water. Bleaching reflects disruption of this partnership.
