Marine life in the Maldives: observe, identify and understand

A silhouette in blue water, an anemonefish to recognise, a shark to identify: the Maldives films offer several starting points. Follow an observation to its species profile to understand the organism, then broaden your exploration to its environment.

Start with a filmed observation

In Blue Lagoon, from 122.0219 to 134.0673 seconds, a reef manta ray appears in the water column near a diver. Its silhouette stands out against the blue. The segment lets you observe it; this alone does not establish that it is feeding or visiting a cleaning station.

Dives that connect you to observations

Blue Lagoon, The Indian Ocean of the Maldives and Treasures of the Maldives each offer Clic-MOI sequences linked to species profiles. The reef manta ray and tawny nurse shark occur in all three films. The Maldives anemonefish and green turtle are recorded in The Indian Ocean of the Maldives and Treasures of the Maldives.

Identify organisms actually filmed

Compare four organisms recorded in these films. The manta, anemonefish, shark and turtle invite you to notice very different body shapes before reading their profiles.

From observed organisms to their environment

The Blue Lagoon sequence shows the manta in open water, without contact with the seabed. This image describes its position at that moment. To understand the environments it may use and compare them with those of other organisms, continue with species profiles and the habitat search. Coral reefs offer another learning route, explored in the article about warm-water reefs.

These examples come from Dive.Explo360 films; they are not an inventory of the whole region. Depth ranges and habitats described in a species profile refer to the organism, not to the specific filming conditions.

A name is a starting point. In The secrets of coral reefs, discover how tiny animals build a reef and how its inhabitants depend on one another. Then explore the chosen organism through species profiles at four reading levels: primary school, middle school, high school and non-specialist adults.

Continue your exploration

Start with what you noticed: body shape, colours and position in the water can guide your search. Use the existing routes by habitat, position in the environment, biological group or ecological role, then return to the video to compare your identification with the images.
