Filamentous Algae

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean

Filamentous algae often form green or brown veils over rocks, shells and even seagrass beds. Whether inconspicuous or very abundant, depending on the season, they shelter a varied community of small animals. Their rapid growth makes them a striking feature of shallow coastal landscapes.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Filamentous algae include several species that form structures of fine, flexible filaments, either separate or in dense tufts. They resemble clumps of fibres covering submerged surfaces.Their colour depends on the species and environmental conditions, ranging from green to brown, sometimes with yellowish shades. They can form mats of varying extent on available substrates.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

These algae colonise many surfaces, including rocks, shells, larger algae and artificial structures. They can also grow on seagrass beds. They are common in shallow coastal areas, where there is enough light for photosynthesis.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

These algae are autotrophic: they produce their own organic matter through photosynthesis. They use light, carbon dioxide and nutrients dissolved in the water.
