Mediterranean Pink Tube Sponge

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean · Northeast Atlantic · Atlantic Ocean

In rocky crevices, the Mediterranean Pink Tube Sponge stands out with its slender upright tubes in pinkish shades. Its openings at the top, called oscula, release water after filtration. Inconspicuous but elegant, it contributes to the balance of the seabed.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

This sponge forms upright structures of tubes or small flexible chimneys, often grouped into irregular tufts. Its colour ranges from pale pink to deeper pink depending on environmental conditions. Its texture is flexible and fragile, with a surface pierced by numerous small pores visible to the naked eye. Each tube ends in an opening at the top called an osculum, through which filtered water is expelled.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It mainly occurs on rocky substrates, often in shaded areas such as overhangs, crevices or cave entrances. It can also colonise exposed walls when conditions are favourable. It is observed at different depths, generally in the Mediterranean.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

Like all sponges, it feeds by filtration. Water circulates through its body via small pores, allowing microscopic particles such as bacteria and organic debris to be retained. Water is then expelled through the oscula. This mechanism contributes to organic matter recycling in the marine environment.
