Rodriguez’s kelp

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean

Observing Rodriguez’s kelp underwater is a rare privilege. This large brown alga forms real oases on deep rocks, where its broad, swaying fronds shelter inconspicuous small animals and enrich Mediterranean biodiversity.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

Rodriguez’s kelp is a large brown alga attached to the substrate by a holdfast, a branching anchoring structure keeping it firmly attached to rocky seabeds. Its thallus forms a long, flexible, often wavy blade that can reach considerable dimensions. Its colour varies from olive-brown to dark brown. The main blade is broad and flexible, sometimes colonised by various marine organisms, giving it an irregular appearance. The stipe is short and inconspicuous, joining the blade to the holdfast.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

This kelp lives in the Mediterranean, mainly at depth on rocky seabeds where light remains weak but sufficient for photosynthesis. It is rare and localised, often present in areas exposed to bottom currents bringing nutrients and suspended particles.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

Like all algae, it produces its own organic matter through photosynthesis, using light, carbon dioxide and nutrients dissolved in the water.
