White sertularian hydroid

In Dive.Explo360: Mediterranean

Careful observation of a sea fan or a rock swept by currents sometimes reveals the White sertularian hydroid. Its fine whitish branches shelter a multitude of associated little animals that filter water and contribute to the richness of the underwater environment.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?

The White sertularian hydroid forms small upright colonies resembling fine whitish bushes. Each colony consists of numerous rigid branches organised into a network. Despite its plant-like appearance, it is a colonial animal composed of many small individuals living together.

WHERE DOES IT LIVE?

It grows attached to different supports: rocks, coralligenous structures or living organisms such as sea fans. It is generally found between a few metres and several tens of metres deep, in areas with currents.

WHAT DOES IT EAT?

This species feeds on tiny organisms suspended in the water. The little polyps making up the colony catch these particles with their tentacles, using the current to bring food within reach.
